Is there a financial interest in investing in longer studies?

In theory, studying for longer raises the probability of finding a job and earning more money. But is it truly profitable considering the necessary investment? Likewise, from a public perspective, are the increases in income taxes and social contributions, tied to higher personal earnings, enough to balance out the original investment? Are there specific countries where pursuing a longer education is more profitable than others? Finally, is there a difference between investing in a boy’s education and in a girl’s?
