Waste Treatment in Europe
In average, each European citizen generates 492 kilograms of waste per year as 2012 Eurostat data on municipal waste shows. Cross-country comparison reveals that Switzerland is the country with the biggest amount of municipal waste generated per capita (694 kg) followed by Denmark (668 kg), Cyprus (663 kg) and Luxembourg (662 kg).
However, mentioned countries treat all the waste they generate, while in EU-28 as a whole 12 kilograms of waste per capita remains untreated. Herewith, landfilling still remains the major method of treatment in the EU accounting for 34% of total waste treated even in spite of sustainable growth of share of recycled and composted waste from 18% in 1995 to 42% in 2012.
