Space in 2008

Based on work by Mario Juric of the Institute for Advanced Study and J. Richard Gott of Princeton University, this visualization mapped notable spacecraft launches and flybys for the year 2008. It originally appeared in Volume 2, Issue 14 of Seed magazine. Starting from the center of the Earth, this map moves outward to encompass the entire solar system in a single "snapshot" image, preserving the proper shapes and orientation of celestial objects. Unless otherwise noted in the accompanying captions, the positions of all objects on the map are plotted as seen from Earth on January 1st, 2008. The spacecraft flybys and landings plotted for dates other than January 1st reflect the positions of their planetary targets at the projected time of the event.
