Forgotten Monuments

Forgotten Monuments

Lazy hikers appreciate them. Now the monument conservators like to ride by cable cars too. They discover forgotten witnesses of Swiss engineering. A few days ago the Swiss Federal Office of Culture has published a cable car inventory (the rst worldwide) pointing out 129 of approximately 3000 cable cars in Switzerland as key technical an architectural monuments. Nearly a quarter is located in the canton of Berne. These cable cars are shown on this chart, in a coordinate system of meters (vertical) and years (horizontal). It begins with the oldest funicular in Europe, the Giessbach funicular built in 1879 and ends by the Niederhornbahn of 1997.
