Environmental Data - Industry Pollution
The following table provides information on trends in industrial production. It shows the evolution of total industrial production expressed as volume indices (1995=100).
• Total industry comprises mining and quarrying, manufacturing and gas, electricity and water.
The environmental impact of industrial activities may vary considerably with structural change: the decline in the OECD countries of the so called traditional industries, such as iron and steel, has typically reduced quantitative pressures on the environment; the growth of the so called new industries can create qualitative pressures, such as soil and groundwater contamination by trace toxic chemicals.
