Cool Science: Discovering the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition

In 2003, a month-long Massachusetts Institute of Technology course offered as an elective for Bio-Engineering undergraduates blossomed into an international competition. Now, the annual competition challenges students around the whorl to build biological systems from a series of interchangeable parts, in hopes of operating systems in living cells. Here, we take a look at the competition and the successful innovation it has transpired.
