UN Global Pulse is an innovation initiative in the Executive Office the Secretary-General established to harness new data and emerging technologies to detect when populations are changing their collective behavior in response to global shocks, such as the compound food, fuel and financial crises. The overarching objective of Global Pulse is to develop a 21st century approach to real-time crisis impact monitoring that enables decision makers to protect vulnerable populations with agile, targeted policy responses.

Recognizing that official statistics are often too slow to make their way through governmental systems to be used effectively when time is of the essence, and that we are now swimming in a sea of “big data,” UN Global Pulse is developing a 21st-Century approach to real-time crisis impact monitoring that will narrow the gap between the onset of a crisis and the availability of actionable information. It will strengthen resilience at multiple levels by enabling collaborative analysis and informed decision-making in times of increasing volatility.
