Founded in 2010, the Design Lab at the K.U.Leuven university in Belgium explores the potential of modern sensing and actuation technology in our built environment, in the context of interaction design, ubiquitous computing and media architecture. Combining the areas of visualization, computation and fabrication, the lab conducts research in developing new paradigms of visualization, even when those might be situated outside of the traditional computer screen. Accordingly, the Design Lab is specialized in developing representations that persuade, making valuable information immediately accessible and understandable when actual decisions are being made. The Design Lab also investigates the role of design and aesthetics in information visualization, in particular within the current popularization of open data, transparent public governance and citizen engagement.

The lab is part of the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Planning (ASRO), which organizes courses for the Bachelor and Master of Engineering (Architecture), a study that combines an excellence in creative design as well as in architectural and engineering sciences.
